How Often Should a Service Business Post on Social Media?

If you run a service business, you’ve probably heard every answer to this question. Post every day. Post three times a day. Post whenever you feel inspired. Most of that advice comes from people who don’t also have a business to run.

Here’s the honest answer we give our clients: for most service businesses, three good posts a week, every single week, beats anything more ambitious that you can’t keep up. Add stories when you have something happening, and you’re in great shape.

Key takeaways

  • Three good posts a week, every week, is the right starting point for most service businesses.
  • Consistency matters more than volume. A quiet account looks like a closed business.
  • Mix three formats: a reel, a carousel, and a branded post.
  • Plan a month ahead and batch your content so it never depends on a busy Tuesday.

Why consistency matters more than volume

Before someone calls a plumber, books a med spa appointment, or hires a contractor, they look the business up. Usually that means your Instagram or Facebook page. They’re not reading every post. They’re scrolling for a few seconds to answer two questions: Is this business still open? and Do they look like they know what they’re doing?

An account that posted twenty times in January and then went quiet answers both questions badly. A steady feed of three posts a week, every week, answers both well. It signals that you’re active, organized, and still taking customers.

The burst-and-disappear trap

Posting every day for two weeks and then going silent for a month looks worse than a slow, steady rhythm. Pick a pace you can keep when business gets busy.

A realistic weekly rhythm

This is the rhythm we use as a starting point for most service businesses. It covers the three formats that matter most right now without burying you in work.

Three posts a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A month of this is twelve posts and zero gaps.

01

Monday: a reel

A short video. Behind the scenes on a job, a quick tip, a before and after, or you answering a question customers ask all the time.

02

Wednesday: a carousel

A swipeable post that teaches something. “5 signs your AC needs service,” “What to expect at your first visit,” or a simple step-by-step.

03

Friday: a branded post

A client review, a team spotlight, an announcement, or a strong photo with a caption that sounds like you.

Three posts, three formats, one rhythm. Once this is running smoothly, you can add more. Most businesses find they never need to.

A starting point for each platform

Every platform works a little differently. You don’t need to be everywhere. Pick the one or two platforms where your customers actually are, and be consistent there.

Our recommended starting point (feed posts per week)
Instagram 3/wk
Facebook 3/wk
LinkedIn 2/wk
TikTok / Shorts 3/wk

Pod Shark starting-point recommendations for service businesses. TikTok and YouTube Shorts can reuse your Instagram reels.

  • Instagram: 3 feed posts a week, plus stories a few times a week when you have something to share. This is where most local customers check you out.
  • Facebook: Share the same 3 posts. Many of your customers, especially homeowners, still look you up here first.
  • LinkedIn: 1 to 2 posts a week if your customers are other businesses, or if you’re building a personal brand as the owner.
  • TikTok and YouTube Shorts: Repost your reels. You don’t need separate content to show up here.

What to post when you’re out of ideas

Running out of ideas is the number one reason business accounts go quiet. Here are six types of posts that work for almost any service business:

  • Answer a common question. If customers ask it on the phone, it belongs on your feed.
  • Show your work. Before and afters, job sites, finished projects, happy clients (with their permission).
  • Go behind the scenes. Your team, your tools, your process. People hire people they feel like they know.
  • Share a review. Turn a great Google review into a clean branded graphic.
  • Teach something quick. A tip your customers can use today, even if it means they need you a little less.
  • Be local. Community events, local partners, the neighborhoods you serve.

Keep an idea list on your phone

Every time a customer asks a good question, add it to a note. That list will keep your feed full for months.

Too little or too much?

Signs you’re posting too little

  • Your most recent post is more than two weeks old
  • You post in bursts, then disappear for a month
  • You can’t remember your last video
  • Customers say “I didn’t know you did that”

Signs you’re posting too much

  • Quality is slipping to hit a number
  • Every post feels like a scramble
  • You’re posting just to post
  • You’ve stopped enjoying it

If you’re in the right-hand column, scale back to three strong posts and focus on doing those well. Three posts you’re proud of will always beat seven you rushed.

How to make it sustainable

The businesses that stay consistent all do some version of the same three things:

  • They plan ahead. A simple monthly content calendar means you’re never deciding what to post the morning of.
  • They batch. Writing a month of captions in one sitting is far easier than writing one caption on a busy Tuesday.
  • They reuse. One photo and video shoot can fuel months of posts, and one podcast episode can become a week of clips.

And if you’ve realized you simply don’t have the time, that’s normal. You have a business to run. That’s exactly why we built our social media management service: we handle the strategy, content, and posting every week, and you approve the calendar before anything goes live.

Since 2021

we have never missed a post.

Quick answers

Is posting every day better than three times a week?

Only if you can keep it up without the quality slipping. For most service businesses, three strong posts a week, every week, does more than daily posts that stop after a month.

Do I need to be on every platform?

No. Pick the one or two platforms where your customers actually look you up, usually Instagram and Facebook for local businesses, and be consistent there.

Can I post the same content on Instagram and Facebook?

Yes. Sharing the same posts on both is a smart way to stay consistent without doubling your work.

The bottom line

Start with three posts a week. Make them good, make them sound like you, and don’t stop. That alone will put you ahead of most of your competitors.
